REGENERATING A COMMUNITY : Köyiçi, Çiğli

Urban regeneration is an approach to city planning to repair the social and economic problems of an urban area, improving the physical and environmental aspects of the city, as well as the buildings. In other words, it is an urban transformation strategy, which maintains the physical, social, economic, and environmental enhancement in declining urban areas. It is expected to respond not only to the needs of the perpetually changing urban environments but alsa to the problems thar emerge from the relationship between the physical conditions of urban space and socio-economic expectations and/or challenges.

The focus of the studio was on exploring the socially sustainable and affordable housing environments with in-situ and community-led regeneration potentials for KöyiçiDistrict in Çiğli. Identifying the issues and opportunities in the local area next to the stream is the focus to understand and probe what to do about the urban space and community. The spatial conditions and everyday lfe in the community were surveyed, successful urban regeneration approaches were analyzed, and methodologies for overcoming the social and economic difficulties by means of architectural and urban design strategies were discussed during the semester.
